In our work, we repeatedly encounter the same pattern.
Companies, teams, and start-ups rely on "proven" or recommended systems. Tools that are familiar. Tools that others use. Tools that are quickly available.
And at first glance, everything seems to work.
But beneath the surface, something entirely different emerges: an IT landscape that does not communicate with each other, continuously incurs costs, and relinquishes your most valuable resource – your data.
Many of these systems are standalone solutions. They hardly communicate with each other, if at all. Processes are maintained redundantly, information is lost or must be manually compiled. What should save time creates complexity.
In addition, there are often significant ongoing costs – subscriptions, licenses, user packages. And with each tool, the dependency on large providers grows, where your data is stored but does not really belong to you.
What is inconvenient in calm times becomes quickly critical in stressful phases.
If your company comes under pressure and payments cannot be made immediately, access to systems and data may be restricted or completely revoked. Important information suddenly becomes unavailable. The resilience of your organisation is weak – because control is lacking.
For exactly these reasons, we have consistently relied on complete open-source solutions for over 20 years – and actively promote their use. Not out of ideology, but from experience. Open source means transparency, integrability, and true data sovereignty to me.
In our CAPE+coop, we also exclusively use open-source technologies – not only because they reduce costs, but because they enable us to connect systems meaningfully, reduce dependencies, and remain sustainably capable of action.
